When discussing this painting, Annika said, "This year, I’ve become obsessed with the concept of air walking.
I can’t stop thinking about how much I want to catch the breeze, step up, and walk on the air. I keep thinking how odd it is that there is so much space up in the sky that we aren’t using.
If we could become unstuck from the sidewalks and roads and transport ourselves through the sky independently from vehicles, it would be much better for the environment than driving and much more fun than a subway ride.
Sadly, I have not yet figured out how to skywalk. So I’ve been working on the solution in paint until I figure out how to enjoy sky-walking in reality. I have made several paintings about my air obsessions.
In this piece, I explore what it would be like if balloons lifted us up. Some people seem happy to be lifted into the air, and some seem more panicked by the sensation."
